In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise belongs to Allah, who honored us with His Clear Book, elevated us through the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him—and made the science of hadith a strong fortress that protects the Shariah from distortion and loss. We praise Him, exalted be He, for His immense blessings. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner, and we bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, sent as a mercy to all of creation. May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, upon his pure family, his noble companions, and all those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.

The science of hadith methodology (mustalah al-hadith) is a unique gift that Allah granted to the Muslim ummah. No nation before us was given a complete, structured system that transmits reports back to its Prophet through connected chains of narration, while clearly distinguishing authentic reports from weak ones. This is part of Allah’s promise to preserve His religion.

From the earliest generations, scholars of hadith worked to make this science accessible to students. They documented its beginnings, clarified its foundational principles, and developed the sciences related to narrators, criticism, and evaluation. Through this effort, the student of knowledge is able to move forward with clarity and insight.

In a time when unverified reports spread widely and many learners are distant from original sources, this course—based on The Science of Hadith Terminology: Keys and Foundations—has been prepared, relying upon Allah. It is designed as a support for beginners and a reminder for more advanced students. The course follows clear and deliberate guidelines:

  • Clear and simple explanations: Every term and definition is explained in straightforward language, followed by examples taken from Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and other well-known works, so the meanings become firmly grounded.
  • Step-by-step learning: The course begins with the stages of recording the Sunnah, leading up to the completion of hadith compilation in the best generations. It then moves on to the emergence of hadith sciences and their branches, allowing the learner to see the full picture before going deeper.
  • Coverage of the most well-known classifications: The course gathers the most important hadith categories—such as sahih, hasan, da‘if, mursal, mudallas, and others—explaining the precise criteria for each, along with their main references and brief practical examples.
  • Introduction to narrator criticism and evaluation: Learners are introduced to al-jarh wa al-ta‘dil and biographical assessment, helping them understand their role in verifying reports and become familiar with their terminology and levels in a concise and beneficial way.

The course content is organized into two main parts:

  • Part One: Roots and History
Three chapters covering the beginnings of hadith recording and the development of hadith sciences, up to and beyond the era of Ibn al-Salah.
  • Part Two: Terminology and Application
Four chapters starting with foundational definitions, followed by rulings related to hadith, an introduction to al-jarh wa al-ta‘dil, and a final chapter focusing on selected issues and applied examples.

This course is intended to be a smooth and practical pathway for students of the Sunnah, helping them grasp the foundations of this noble field and join the blessed group of those who carry it. About them, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“May Allah brighten the face of the one who hears a hadith from us, memorizes it, and conveys it to others.”

We ask Allah the Most High to make this effort purely for His sake, beneficial to His servants, and to grant us sincerity in both speech and action. Whatever is correct in this work is from Allah, and whatever is mistaken is from ourselves and from Shaytan. Allah and His Messenger are free from it.

May Allah’s blessings, peace, and grace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, upon all his family and companions. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
